Meet The Firm
Steve and Margaret Kirby met in Law School. They hung out their shingle, shortly after Steve passed the bar; then Margaret passed it with both of them passing on the first attempt. Steve worked on private criminal work, personal injury and unlawful detainer cases. Margaret worked on personal injury matters and on unlawful detainer matters. The criminal, personal injury and unlawful detainer case work gave the Kirbys over 200 court and jury trials in the first years of their practice. In the late 1980s and early 1990s Steve and Margaret were retained by most of the major taxi companies in California to handle defense work and were on the ground floor when SuperShuttle Transportation System began and grew into a national company. The Kirbys did common carrier defense work for approximately 10 years along with their Plaintiff's personal injury work.
Steve and Margaret decided to focus their practice on Plaintiff's personal injury work and specifically, Steve's passion, motorcycle injury accidents. Steve had ridden motorcycles since he got out of the Marine Corps in 1971 and put together engines at night while he attended Law School during the day. Steve taught Margaret how to ride in the early 2000s and together they have ridden all over the United States and the provinces of Canada.
The hallmark of their practice is their personal service to the clients and the practice has encompassed trying cases throughout California from Redding to San Diego. Steve's cell phone is available 24-7 and it is normal for Steve to be going somewhere to assist a client while others on weekends and at night are sleeping.
Having tried and engineered numerous 7 figure and 8 figure settlements against governmental agencies, corporations, and individuals Steve knows the winning strategy for litigation and settlement. When the insurance companies realize that Steve is on board their high figure case they know that they either face a jury trial with a potentially higher verdict in excess of their limits or they resolve the case in an amicable manner.
Margaret Kirby originally hails from the East Coast and to this day carries with her the same East-Coast-no-nonsense attitude towards litigating cases. Margaret, also known as Peggy, left the East Coast in 1970 to enjoy the warm climate of California. She attended University of West Los Angeles and passed the bar in 1979.
She has tried hundreds of bench trials, served as Temporary Judge in various South Bay courts and was on the Los Angeles, Mediation/Arbitration Panel of volunteers. Ms. Kirby is also a member of CAALA, CAOC and both the State Bar and the Central District Court in Los Angeles.
She is the tenacious force behind the scenes at the office, making the calls to insurance companies, medical institutions and Veterans Affairs offices to make sure every dollar that her client deserves is discovered and secured. With a single call she can connect with the right folks in the right department to get the answers and action needed to bring justice for each client.
She is also a long time Harley Davidson rider herself and understands the challenges of being a rider on the current highways and byways. You can see her at various rider events in California where she and her husband, Steve ride their own bikes to the events! She rides AND litigates!!
James is Steve and Margaret’s nephew and recent graduate of law school. Kirbys Law has always been a family firm and James will continue that pattern. James grew up a multisport athlete including playing football, basketball, and volleyball in High School. The lifetime of competitive sports fostered a competitive edge and desire to use all of his tools to beat his opponents.
James grew up riding on the back of his dad’s motorcycle and has experienced life on 2 wheels from California to South Dakota and California to Alaska. Having grown up around motorcycles, James has an appreciation for the culture and difficulties that are unique to the motorcycle lifestyle.
James graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a double major in 2009 and followed up with a law school degree from Golden Gate University in 2014 where he won the Paul S. Jordan Award for service and contribution to the school.
Steve and Margaret have taken James under their wing and he is taking advantage of the wealth of knowledge and experience at Kirbys Law. James works on all aspects of our cases from signing up clients to pre-trial litigation, and is being taught trial work directly from Steve.
